Table Of Content
Which means that I often work on dashboards, internal tools and web apps with a LOT of complex data to display. Most of the time, that data is displayed in different forms and variations of tables. This hover effect allows users to focus on a single row at a time. If you have multiple columns and data points, this effect enables users to highlight a row, making it easier to read. UX designers must arrange and group columns according to their relevance.

But most importantly — don’t forget to use common sense. In a nutshell, if you’re looking to better visualize your product or user data, you must invest in a great data table — there’s simply no way around it. The amount of information in a row could be a challenge; one way to sort it is by adding expandable rows to your designs.

Get 5 tips about Figma and design systems from me every Friday. Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets refer to anchored columns as “frozen”. Tabular, or monospaced font, has a fixed width and spacing for every character. Create a ‘zebra stripes’ effect by alternating white fill color with a darker color such as light gray. If using other colors, use a light fill color and alternate it with a slightly darker shade.
Designing Data Tables the Right Way
Even Excel or Google Sheets do not have the best user experience when we are talking mobile. Just be careful with images; normally, a profile picture, for example, is okay; however, a very complex, small picture that is barely understandable adds unnecessary visual noise. Adding more items to a table could be a game-changer for its ability to communicate properly. You can have check boxes, buttons, warnings, toggles, and different icons to add more context to your content. A hover-over could be helpful because you are showing the users where they are and what they are about to click.

Additionally, headers must also be aligned according to their column data. You can create much more than just data tables with this plugin. So, your data table needs to appear nicely, without swiping left/right to see the columns that don’t fit on a small screen.
Unique Table Design Capabilities
These tools lack features to create basic table functionality like sorting, search, scrolling, actions, etc. In this table, the anchored header ensures context while scrolling along with watch names, different styles, and good contrast. Additionally, features and functions are categorized (materials, finishes, quick look, health and wellness, and key differences) along with expendable tech specs to help the user make the right decision. The primary function of this page is to aid the user compare data and take an action (buy/know more). Provide contextual data so that your users can have a complete grasp of what information they are looking at while navigating the table. This feature is particularly important when designing tables possessing huge datasets or on smaller screens.
Horizontal and vertical scrolling
Viewing tables on smaller screens requires a lot of changes in table design. A table design built on large desktops might not work on smaller devices. To create a featured section, change the formatting of the cells. For example, modify the fill color of the cell or the font size of the text to make it stand out.
Data tables should enable users to scan, understand, analyze, compare, and act upon the information within them. For example, instead of having separate columns for user and email, the email can be added as subtext below the user’s name. Maintain a minimum of 16px padding on both the right and left of each column. This means the space between each column should total at least 32px. This can be done with different text styles and backgrounds.
UXPin is an advanced prototyping tool for building interactive, high-fidelity prototypes. Column sorting is essential for users to reorder data according to their preferences. For example, a warehouse manager can sort orders from the earliest first to monitor progress and address issues early.
This will keep the context while users scroll through the rest of the table. A table in HTML consists of table cells inside rows and columns. HTML tables allow web developers to arrange data into rows and columns. I’m going to select the first one, which will create a Blank table.
However, you can link the model document to the Excel file. I’ll change that default First Instance name to Initial and add in a Final configuration under Default. I’ll copy the initial values to the Default configuration, and create .35 and .08 for the values for Final. Another thing to note is that the Design Table has a very specific format. The A column is where configuration names are put and Row 2 is where the parameter names are put.
Enable users to customize the order and display of the avalible data. Enable users to manipulate data presented in the table. Filtering data helps users find what they’re looking for, gain different insights, and make comparisons.
This helps you easily recognize what the data is about and instantly see the most critical information. These statuses are probably some of the most important data points there are in the table. Or use it to highlight negative and positive details in a comparison, a status field. Enterprise applications such as CRM systems are complex and often contain a massive amount of information from various sources, modules, and users. If not presented clearly and logically, this data can overwhelm your users, crippling them from performing any action.
If data can’t be visualized and acted upon, it becomes redundant. What makes things even more difficult is that data tables vary in size, content, complexity, and purpose. Regardless, they must clarify the data presented and help the user derive insights and perform actions. A good data table has a clear header and description, so users know what they’re viewing. Designers must also use legible typography and adequate spacing between columns and rows to make it easy for users to read and absorb content. “Custom settings”—this term is a nightmare to all designers.
Instead, spend considerable time deliberating and thinking it over. For the best results, you must be strict in your selection and eliminate everything unnecessary. Also, ensure that the secondary information is hidden unless the user wants to check it out.
With these answers, you will be able to decide which fields are mandatory, columns and row sizes, the correct headers, how to sort the table, and any customizations that users might require. Designing useful data tables that offer users value and utility is easier said than done, but it is fully possible with the right tool. Interactive data tables are more popular than static tables.
